Protecting Your Money for Nothing and Your Streams for Free

Piracy has been with us since the silent movie era. So has enforcement. So your CFO isn’t crazy to ask, “What’s the ROI on fighting?” This session at the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA) 2020 Media & Entertainment Day surveyed the academic literature on that very question, exploring concepts like “displacement” as well as how the bad guys make money. If you’re trying to figure out how to measure piracy and fund your defenses, download the video.

Leading the session is Akamai’s Shane Keats, who analyzes security challenges through a video-centric lens. Prior to working at Akamai, Shane was a product marketing leader at security company McAfee and a business news journalist with CNN Moneyline.

Despite differing definitions of what constitutes video piracy, there’s a consensus around the idea that piracy in all its forms takes potential revenue off the table for streaming providers and content owners. - How can streaming media companies best address the forms of piracy that impact them the most?
    - What’s the best mix of proactive and reactive measures?
    - Can companies like Netflix crackdown on habits like password sharing in ways that don’t alienate loyal subscribers?
