On 1 December 2021, sections of South Africa’s Cybercrimes Act commenced, creating new offences related to cybercrime and granting law enforcement authorities additional powers to investigate ransomware attacks, cyber forgery, extortion and the unlawful interception of data.
The Act raises the stakes for organisations’ compliance obligations – as well as the risk of severe penalties.
