We wrote 12 months ago of the potential economic recovery, post vaccine roll out, the
commitment of Central Banks to stimulate growth and the rude health of many consumers and
corporates. It proved a strong buying opportunity. Given the thematic relapse in equities in
recent months: bonds rallying, narrowing of market leadership and more economically cyclical
businesses underperforming, we believe investors have another opportunity to invest in lowly
valued, but high quality, cyclical businesses.

TB Saracen UK Alpha: A return to normality?

In our previous BrightTalk webinar we noted that by the end of the year the world and equity landscape might be quite different due to a solution to US Elections, likely stimulus packages for the US and Europe, a Brexit deal and a potential vaccine to Covid. Most of this was achieved in the Quarter and equity markets responded accordingly. 

In this webinar we want to highlight the change in leadership towards the Value style as confidence in a global economic recovery gathers strength. It is our contention that we are only at the start of this “Value” rally and it has much further to go. We will also revisit our comments from the last webinar on inflation and look at how much further the shift in style towards more cyclical and value-based investment has to run. 

It would appear that we are in the final phase of the pandemic and news-flow should begin to improve in the coming weeks. We continue to be optimistic that the underlying pent-up demand from individuals and actions by governments will stimulate a recovery in economic growth.  Consequently, we retain a portfolio bias to more economically cyclical businesses including maintaining a near maximum weighting in Financials.

Change in leadership in the market - Outperformance of Value only just started.

The presentation today will include a brief introduction to Saracen and some market themes which will be covered by David and then we will move on to the fund itself which will be covered by Scott. 

The UK Equity Income sector has been a foundation of many UK investor portfolios for decades and has hosted a number of our most celebrated fund managers.
However, the current COVID19 crisis has had a profound effect on the ability of companies to pay dividends with significant numbers of businesses cutting, cancelling or deferring payments. This has led to a crisis of confidence in UK equity income strategies.

The UK equity market remains unloved, with a significant performance and valuation gap relative to other global markets, particularly in UK-centric businesses. However, we are now seeing a number of companies putting recent events behind them and looking forward to the future with more confidence.

In this webcast we examine the impact of these seismic changes and look at the ability of the TB Saracen UK Income fund to grow capital and income from today’s low valuation point.

TB Saracen UK Income: Capital First, Income to Follow

In this webinar, we provide three examples of what we think are consensus views held by investors that could potentially be wrong.  Each proposition will have a significant impact in equity market leadership if it turns out to be unsubstantiated.  Namely Inflation is dead, Bond yields will remain low and Growth will outperform value.

We highlight the potential benefits to Value based funds when investor confidence improves, either on the strength of the economic recovery, if there were signals of rising inflation and bond yields, or investors seriously consider what is ‘priced-in’ to many valuations in the technology sector.  Any sort of correction would appear to have some way to go.

During Q4 we will have US Elections, a likely stimulus package from the new administration, perhaps more from Europe too, maybe a Brexit deal and potentially a vaccine to Covid as several Phase III Trials read out over the next few months.  The equity landscape might be quite different and potentially there is much in the above that is likely to be favourable to Value based investors. 

With all this in mind, we go through the positioning of the TB Saracen Global Income & Growth fund and highlight some of its quality holdings and the favourable valuation and yield on the fund.
