Octo Members brought together a multi-asset specialist and a global equity fund manager to debate the issue with Vincent McEntegart, investment manager in Aegon’s Multi-Asset Investing team and manager of the Aegon Diversified Monthly Income Fund and Graham Campbell, CEO at Saracen Fund Managers and co-manager of the Global Income & Growth Fund offering their views and analysis.

Assessing the situation, Campbell said: “Clients are definitely concerned, and looking at portfolios, because they're worried about inflation. And for those of us who remember high inflation, we also remember how difficult it is - once it starts - to be eradicated. 

Advisers are interested in sheltering their clients from inflation but also looking at the balance of portfolios perhaps moving from a growth towards a more value approach as well.”

We wrote 12 months ago of the potential economic recovery, post vaccine roll out, the
commitment of Central Banks to stimulate growth and the rude health of many consumers and
corporates. It proved a strong buying opportunity. Given the thematic relapse in equities in
recent months: bonds rallying, narrowing of market leadership and more economically cyclical
businesses underperforming, we believe investors have another opportunity to invest in lowly
valued, but high quality, cyclical businesses.
