PRI, New York State Dept. of Financial Services, CFA and TIAA General Account
The global fixed income community is increasingly seeking ways to factor in ESG criteria and sustainability considerations when allocating capital and managing risks; and the majority of credit ratings agencies have begun to reflect ESG factors in credit risk analysis. But while European based insurers have been publicly embracing and reporting on the incorporation of ESG, their US counterparts have been less forthcoming even though portfolio asset risk and credit risk is certainly top of mind for the industry.

Please join the PRI and the CFA Society Boston on November 9th to kick off a series of events exploring responsible investing and the US insurance industry. In this session, insurance investment portfolio practitioners will discuss their current ESG approach alongside PRI’s Head of Fixed Income Carmen Nuzzo and New York State Dept. of Financial Services, Director of Sustainability and Climate Initiatives, Yue (Nina) Chen. The conversation will also look to identify industry trends we may expect to take shape in the coming year.

Investors are calling out for hard information on the financial impacts climate change will have on companies. The financials define profitability and drive executive remuneration, so ensuring they properly reflect climate-related risks is crucial. TCFD and other initiatives go a long way in providing this information, but a focus on the front end reporting only provides half the story. Investment decisions, both by companies and investors, also depend on the numbers disclosed in the audited financial statements.

Fuller financial disclosures enable investors to incorporate climate risks into their investment decision making, helping focus investment on those companies that are more likely to thrive in a carbon-constrained future. Currently, most companies assume business as usual in their financial statements, while at the same time in the annual report recognising that business as usual is something that the planet simply cannot sustain.

This is why the IASB’s (International Accounting Standards Board) accounting treatment of climate issues is so crucial. The IASB, has issued a paper making clear that material climate change risks must be incorporated in IFRS financial reporting. If properly followed it will have profound implications for the way companies are valued and the decisions made by investors. In this webinar we examine the implications of the IASB paper and what the accounting profession, investors and regulators will need to do to ensure that ensure companies declare profits consistent with a sustainable world.

  • Consultation on PRI’s Human Rights Framework for Institutional Investors Recorded: Sep 8 2020 59 mins
    The PRI
The responsibility of institutional investors to respect human rights is reflected in international human rights standards, and constitute a universal, normative expectation by employees, beneficiaries, clients, governments, and wider society. It was clearly defined by the UN in 2011, following extensive stakeholder consultation, and immediately reflected in OECD standards. These expectations have increased – driven by growing visibility and urgency of many human rights issues – and a better understanding of the role of investors in shaping real-world outcomes.

In this webinar we will speak about PRI’s human rights programme – why and how investors should respect human rights – and provide signatories and other stakeholders with an opportunity to ask questions as part of a formal PRI consultation on the topic.

During the first part of the webinar, we will present some of the scientific evidence on the role of deforestation, as well as lessons learned during the Covid-19 crisis so far.

In the second part of the webinar, we will discuss the findings of a report authored by KLP, Storebrand and Rainforest Foundation Norway.
