Severe convective storms (SCS), including hail, straight-line winds and tornadoes, have averaged more than $35bn in insured losses annually in the US over the last decade (Swiss Re Institute, 2024), often outpacing hurricanes as the leading driver of catastrophe losses. Beyond property: The coming casualty catastrophe market

In recent years, the insurance industry’s perception of risk from severe thunderstorms, also known as severe convective storms, has shifted significantly. Too often, insurers walk away from lines or classes of business that no longer fit their growth strategies. This business may lack scale, have burdensome reinsurance or capital requirements, or no longer aligns with the carriers’ goals.

The 2025 Los Angeles wildfires—most notably the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires—have shattered historic records, destroying over 16,000 structures across 37,000 acres and resulting in insured losses estimated between $25bn and $40bn, with total economic losses potentially exceeding $150bn. The Palisades Fire by itself brought an estimated insured loss of $23bn, which is costlier than any other full year of insured wildfires losses on record, Gallagher Re said.

For commercial property insurers, these events have not only triggered a surge in claims but also exposed critical vulnerabilities in risk aggregation, underwriting, and claims management.

How Insurers Are Harnessing Gen AI to Improve Risk Selection

As the frequency and severity of natural catastrophe losses continues to rise, insurers are turning their focus beyond underwriting perils to mitigating losses before they happen.

Insured natural catastrophe losses were USD 108 billion in 2023, the fourth year in a row of insured losses north of USD 100 billion and a continuation of the 5–7% annual growth trend since 1994, Swiss Re said. Swiss Re Institute estimates that insured losses could double within the next 10 years as temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more frequent and intense.

To stem the rising tide of claims, insurers are working with clients before catastrophes strike to improve their resilience, using tools including: smart technology, such as telematics and IoT Integration to detect, respond and link properties to emergency services in real time; offering concrete advice to insureds to reduce their risks; employing their own emergency response crews to solidify potential targets before an event strikes.
