  • Blueprint Series: The Complete Guide to Observability Jun 23 2020 1:00 pm UTC 60 mins
Yoann Lechevallier, Lightstep | Andy Steed, Big Data LDN
Easy-to-understand monoliths are giving way to distributed systems: microservices, serverless, meshes, and proxies in every possible combination. These systems offer developers the freedom to build new features and technology faster, as they are no longer beholden to the elaborate release processes associated with monolithic architecture.

But, like all good things, there is a price: distributed systems are inherently difficult to operate and maintain. When something breaks—which it invariably will—how can you quickly comb through the myriad dependencies? How can you separate good hypotheses from bad ones?

    Enter observability...

Learn how observability helps developers understand multi-layered architectures: what’s slow, what’s broken, and what needs to be done to improve performance.
  • Technology Modernisation Series: How to make use of Apache Flink Jun 16 2020 1:00 pm UTC 60 mins
Nico Kruber, Ververica | Andy Steed, Big Data LDN
In this webinar, we will give an introduction into stateful stream processing with Apache Flink and show how it can enable you to build real-time, event driven applications. We will take you through the journey of enabling customer 360 / personalisation applications and building a dynamic fraud detection engine. We will present a few techniques and tips to use with Flink and elaborate on why Apache Flink is the perfect tool for these use cases. We will continue this journey by looking at what is needed to deploy a Flink application on the road to production, as well as updating on the recently released community edition of Ververica Platform.

Speakers: Nico Kruber, Ververica and Andy Steed, Big Data LDN
  • Graph Data Science: What's the big deal? Jun 9 2020 1:00 pm UTC 60 mins
Alicia Frame, Neo4j | Matthew Sellwood, IQVIA | Andy Steed, Big Data LDN
Graph data science lets you leverage the power of relationships -- the connections between your data points -- to improve model prediction and answer previously intractable questions. Alicia Frame, Lead Product Manager for Data Science at Neo4j, will demonstrate the value of connected data for improving your data science and analytics applications. We'll walk through valuable use cases for graphs in data science, and then getting started using a knowledge graph, to using graph algorithms (like community detection or centrality) to answer global analytics questions, and finally improving machine learning pipelines using graph based feature engineering. Alicia will speak to how Neo4j's new Graph Data Science Library lets users get prototypes into production and show value quickly, empowering your team to incorporate cutting edge techniques into existing ML projects.

Following this, Matthew Sellwood, currently a Product Manager for IQVIA, will share an open source project that makes use of the graph data science library for lead optimisation of molecules in drug discovery. The project makes use of open source databases alongside the graph data science library to find new insights that could help chemists decide what molecule to make next in the process of designing a potential new drug.

    Speakers:
Alicia Frame, Lead Product Manager for Data Science - Neo4j
Matthew Sellwood, Product Manager - IQVIA
Andy Steed, Content Director, Big Data LDN

Migrating RDBMS Monoliths Into a Transformational Data Architecture

In this webinar, part of our Technology Modernisation Series, we are looking at the business case for upgrading your RDBMS to a more current data architecture so as to meet the demands of modern applications. We’re delighted to be joined by Ankit Patel, Principle Architect, Datastax and Giuliano Altamura, Financial Services Business Unit Manager at Fincons Group

    Talk 1:
Migrating RDBMS Monoliths Into a Transformational Data Architecture
Modern application demands for scale, uptime, and distributed low latency access are pushing RDBMS technologies past the breaking point. Modern data platforms such as Apache Cassandra offer hope but data models and architectures are vastly different. How do you bridge the gap?

Watch as Ankit Patel from DataStax discusses how your DB2 or Oracle enterprise can take advantage of Cassandra today. He will discuss:

How does Cassandra compare with relational in terms of data models and architecture?
How can an enterprise migrate from relational to NoSQL without any downtime?
Can you just offload some of the more expensive RDBMS functions to Cassandra?

    Talk 2:
A series of real-life use cases of the technology from the financial sector with Giuliano Altamura, Financial Services Business Unit Manager at Fincons Group

Mike Ferguson, Intelligent Business Strategies | Ciaran Doyle, Looker | Andy Steed, Big Data LDN
In the third and final instalment of the Modern Data Architecture series we turn our attention to Data Visualisation. With multiple analytical systems now being implemented in organisations, a major challenge is how to empower end users not only to leverage these systems and be able to connect to data within them, but also to enable them to invoke analytical assets they create such as machine learning models and graph analytics. Industry Analyst Mike Ferguson explores how this can be done from within mainstream self-service BI tools using a combination of historical business intelligence together with real-time alerts, recommendations and predictions in BI reports and dashboards. This session will also look at how you can do this in a cloud computing environment to improve business outcomes.
Joining Mike will be Ciaran Doyle from data visualisation experts Looker and Andy Steed, Content Director of Big Data LDN.
