John McConnell studied clinical microbiology and parasitology at the University of East London, before spending 6 years researching septic-shock-related topics at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London (now part of Imperial College London). He joined The Lancet in 1990 as a peer-review editor before becoming the first Web Editor in 1996. In 2001, John was the founding editor of The Lancet Infectious Diseases. He has appeared as an expert commentator on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News, Al Jazeera, CNBC, CNN, and CCTV America. In the past year, The Lancet Infectious Diseases has published some of the most impactful research on COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccines: An Update on Research & Global Availability

Research assessment should not be centered solely on bibliometrics such as publication and citation metrics but should encompass other measures that address the broad range of assessment-related questions. These cover research inputs, outputs and outcomes, such as funding, collaboration, usage, commercialization and the adoption of innovation. As more diverse data sources and metrics are used, a richer and more informative picture of research emerges.

The International Center for the Study of Research (ICSR) was established by Elsevier in 2019 with a mission to further the study of research and thus to contribute to the evidence base supporting the practice of research strategy, evaluation and policy. In 2020, ICSR and Elsevier signed the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and endorsed the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics, two internationally-recognized statements of best practice in responsible research assessment.

In this Library Connect webinar, Christopher Belter will discuss what responsible research assessment might look like in practice for a large biomedical funding agency. ICSR staff members Andrew Plume and Holly Falk-Krzesinski will then discuss the recommendations of both DORA and the Leiden Manifesto and their implications for Elsevier as well as for librarians and their users.

Advancing responsible research assessment: implications for librarians

No-one is surprised that some of our most critical needs are met by remote delivery of goods and services. Digital transformation can be a mechanism for more efficiency. It can bring about new modes of practice, content creation and behaviour. Institutions can make their own decisions and can get back control. In short, everyone can be a pioneer.

Librarians, publishers, scientific researchers and whole institutions are looking to learn more about how they can develop sustainable digital solutions beyond COVID-19 for the longer-term scenarios that are already emerging. New forms and use of materials all serve to eliminate the need for direct contact in physical space. Even physical environments will be predicated on evolving systems of digital information. Intensified financial pressure will also shape the future, with a reassessment of the commercial value of information and how cooperation and collaboration forms part of the new business model.

Webinar participants will have an opportunity to hear from leading practitioners across the region and beyond, as well as sharing their own concerns and solutions to date. The discussions will build on this exchange by drawing on recent work by Professor David Baker and Dr. Lucy Ellis, addressing the future of digital information. Covid-19 has changed the world; responding to the pandemic and its aftermath will preoccupy our societies and our professions for years to come.

Library and information services are meeting the immediate challenges, but what of the longer term, when it difficult to see ahead?

‘Going digital’ has enabled librarians to provide continuity of access and service at this difficult time. But what is the future for online and networked information provision? How and where should libraries be placed on the digital/print continuum, when physical space is still needed and valued?

Traditional supply chains are breaking down because of the pandemic. Productive and robust partnerships between libraries and publishers in the creation and dissemination of research will be of critical importance. What role will publishers play?

This webinar is the last in this series and follows on from the successful international event held in September in which the immediate practicalities of providing library services during a pandemic were presented and discussed, at a time when the longer-term future is not clear. The upcoming event builds on this and addresses the main concerns identified for follow-up by delegates.

Participants will be offered an opportunity to hear from leading practitioners across the region and beyond as well as sharing their own concerns to date. Live polls will give delegates ample opportunity to participate in the webinar discussions and shape the outcomes of the event.
