The focus of the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Twente is to transfer current research in advanced manufacturing directly into industrial practice. Industry 4.0 is all about optimization; from managing big data to efficiency in the production line. All this aims at enabling businesses to make quicker, smarter decisions while minimizing costs. This webinar sets out to explain the challenges and to offer solutions in the adoption of I4.0 related technologies.

The Roadmap to Digitalisation

Many manufacturers are busy with transitioning to digital manufacturing. Yet, deployment of new digital technologies, adaptation of the scalable, digital architecture that will allow connectivity of data systems on the level of the whole factory and network of factories, is not there.

Main technical condition for digital manufacturing is the adequate digital backbone: fully connected digital systems and well-defined data governance.

Nevertheless, robust data and IT infrastructure is not all company needs. Digitalization at scale requires:
  • Strong leadership and clear strategic directions regarding how digital transformation will create new business value.
  • Technical, managerial, and transformational capabilities and resources to understand and execute the changes.
  • Culture with cross-functional set-up, with agile way of working and strong incentives for people to make it happen.

In the last three years, Fraunhofer Project Center in the Netherlands supported many SMEs and multinational is transition to digitalization at scale. Our learnings from the market will be shared in this edition.

Digital Twinning - Where do you start?

The COVID19 crisis has changed the way we live forever. Many new challenges have been presented to us and at no time has technology been used to assist almost all of humanity at the same time. It has been suggested that AM can be used to help with the crisis by printing masks, ventilator fittings and other parts that are in short supply at times like this. This is however not the first time that AM has been applied to help in crisis situations. Watch the on-demand as Prof. Ian Gibson, Scientific Director of the Fraunhofer Project Centre (FPC) at the University of Twente shares how they are helping local industries to manage the transition to Industry 4.0 through adoption of additive manufacturing. This is the only Fraunhofer in the Netherlands and focuses on advanced manufacturing related applications research. Additive Manufacturing is a key element of this, where the aim is to enable manufacturing industry to make an effective transition towards direct manufacturing using AM. Ian will go on to describe the approach FPC is taking, with particular emphasis on the integration of technologies and why FPC is partnering with companies like Additive Industries to further this cause.
