Hydrogen: From Hype to Reality

Central to the vision for a net-zero future are the ambitious plans of the UKRI’s Industrial Decarbonisation challenge that will invest in the development of low-carbon technologies to increase the competitiveness of industry and contribute to the UK’s drive for clean growth. It will reduce the carbon footprint of heavy and energy intensive industries in the UK, such as iron and steel, cement, refining and chemicals.

The £170 million investment by UKRI, matched by £261 million from industry, aims to establish the world’s first net zero industrial clusters by 2040, largely through carbon capture, utilisation and storage and by establishing hydrogen networks. 

Today’s session will bring together the six IDC Cluster Plan projects, each of which is developing a blueprint to achieve net-zero emissions in an industrial cluster. The session will explore their plans and discuss the roadmap ahead.

Its main focus is assisting projects to develop investment-grade business cases and providing capital funding that will help secure public and private match finance to demonstrate innovative low-carbon technologies. 

You’ll also hear from Warmworks who deliver the Scottish Government’s nationwide energy efficiency scheme, Warmer Homes Scotland. This provides insulation, efficient heating, and renewable technologies in the homes of households who are struggling with the cost of high energy bills. Next comes the Energy Saving Trust about their advice and support programmes followed by Zero Waste Scotland who will talk about the SME Loans Programme. All will be sharing those all-important ‘lessons learned’ and success stories.

The Climate Emergency and Planning: Have we got the balance right?

UK Research and Innovation’s flagship Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) launched four years ago, supports industry to unlock the potential of local energy systems, reduce carbon emissions in foundation industries, design new battery systems, decarbonise industrial clusters and pioneer new construction processes, all with the ultimate goal of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. Overall, the ISCF has 10 challenges contributing to net-zero targets and has £2.6 bn to award.

UKRI’s road to net zero; Investing for impact

Climate change and the climate emergency are with us. In 2019, the UK Government and the devolved administrations committed to the Net Zero target as recommended by the Committee on Climate Change. Reaching net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions requires extensive changes across the economy, but the foundations are in place. 

Major infrastructure decisions need to be made in the near future and quickly implemented. These changes are unprecedented in their overall scale, but large-scale transitions have been achieved successfully in the UK before, such as the natural gas switchover in the 1970s or the switch to digital broadcasting in the 2000s.

How are we charting the path to net zero? With a year to go, what are our hopes and aspirations for next November’s UN climate summit in Glasgow (COP26)? How can we truly shift the dial? Our panelists will certainly give us food for thought as they consider both topics, indeed UK domestic climate ambition can be the basis for UK international leadership in 2021 in the Presidency of OP26 and in the G7 Presidency.

The Path to Net Zero and COP26

How do countries win the race to deliver hydrogen and jobs at scale?
One of our first webinars, masterminded by Matthew Knight, Head of Business Development at Siemens Energy, was our original ‘Speed and Scale’. As he explained in June: “To deliver net zero by 2050, with expected growth, we must completely replace the world’s energy system of today with something twice the size and greenhouse gas-free during the next 30 years. Energy numbers are big. Mega and Giga will not be enough. We must get to Tera and fast, we have less than 1 billion seconds to do it.” 
 
We’ve taken this original idea and asked him and his panel to look specifically at hydrogen as it soars up the energy agenda. In early September a report released by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC) and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult said the UK has the right nexus of factors - a strong industrial base, world-leading academic research, and offshore wind capacity potential – to produce low cost, sustainable hydrogen without CO2 emissions from water electrolysis. How do other sectors see it?

The Green Recovery

In 2020, the UK is leading the world in the development of wave and tidal technologies based on our engineering prowess and excellent natural ocean resources. The IEA forecast that the global ocean energy industry will be worth £76 billion by 2050. Here in the UK, our tidal stream industry could generate a net cumulative benefit to the UK by of £1.4bn by 2020, including considerable exports and the creation of 4,000 jobs. Wave energy, which is at an earlier stage of development, has the potential to add a net positive contribution to the UK economy worth a cumulative benefit of £4.0bn and create 8,100 jobs by 2040.

Both tidal stream and wave energy have the potential to generate high quality, highly skilled jobs across the UK in maritime and peripheral regions including supply chain and local economic benefits.
