Dell Technologies and Intel Corporation are committed to accelerating the energy transition and advancing decarbonization of electric utilities. We are partnering on strategic initiatives to assist in the modernization of the electric grid, including the distribution substation. Increased electrification and growth in Distributed Energy Resources (DER) necessitate a more flexible, data-driven substation architecture to support the bidirectional flow of electricity and optimize the overall performance of the grid. This new common substation architecture will improve safety, security, and reliability, as well as simplify management and enable advanced (or edge instead of advanced?) analytics capabilities. It will include the consolidation of substation application workloads onto a VMware virtualized Intel-based common substation server platform. This standardized platform architecture replaces the legacy approach of building custom, fit-for-purpose hardware devices and deploying proprietary software to substations.
The Intel-powered, Dell PowerEdge XR12 server, is part of the growing Dell server portfolio designed to operate in extreme and rugged environments at the edge. This server configuration has been tested and validated to be fully compliant with the global power industry IEC 61850-3 substation operating standard.
