Integrating DDS Into the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform

The AUTOSAR Consortium has recently adopted Data Distribution ServiceTM (DDS) as a connectivity standard for its next-generation Adaptive Platform. In combination with the ara::com API, DDS enables Adaptive applications to achieve reliable, scalable and secure communications leveraging a rich set of Quality of Service (QoS) policies, while adhering to the semantics of ara::com's service-oriented architecture.

In this webinar, we’ll explore the integration of DDS into the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform. We’ll highlight the most salient use cases for the combination of DDS and AUTOSAR Adaptive. Also, we’ll focus on RTI's reference implementation of the DDS network binding for the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform Demonstrator, and illustrate how it can be easily integrated with the RTI Connext ecosystem. Lastly, we’ll also address some of the ongoing efforts to integrate DDS into the AUTOSAR Classic Platform.

This communication pattern is extremely flexible and is often considered a super pattern upon which many well-known patterns, such as request-reply and queuing, can be constructed.     In 2010, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) released the first version of their General Vehicle Architecture standard (Def Stan 23-009), more widely known as GVA. The GVA standard defined a set of requirements for the development of military vehicles based on a single cohesive and logically connected architecture. The motivation was to reduce risk and costs through the entire vehicle life cycle, while at the same time improving equipment capability through better integration and scalability.

    Today, the UK MoD mandates the use of the GVA standard for all future land vehicle platforms and upgrade programmes. The GVA approach is currently also being followed by many other nations, as well by NATO through its NGVA programme.

    The success of GVA is a fine example of the benefit of adopting open standards. And one of the most critical open standards specified in GVA is Data Distribution ServiceTM (DDS), which is used as the underlying software framework for vehicle development. In turn, the data model that underpins DDS is itself woven into the GVA solution through the Land Data Model, which the MoD defines and maintains.
