How to Simplify SOA Development Using Connext DDS, Part 3 of 6

The design and development of distributed systems is challenging. Currently there are multiple ongoing efforts that aim to simplify development by providing reusable patterns and architectures that can be applied across different industries.

RTI ConnextⓇ DDS provides a holistic solution for distributing data that follows, at its core, a data-centric publish-subscribe communication model. This communication pattern is extremely flexible and is often considered a super pattern upon which many well-known patterns, such as request-reply and queuing, can be constructed. In this Tech Talk, we explain how to implement Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) using standard Data Distribution ServiceTM (DDS) features. In particular, we will demonstrate how to leverage mechanisms defined in the OMG® Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) Over DDS specification to create DDS Services, and will show how to leverage RTI Connext Request-Reply APIs to use them. As part of the presentation, we'll take a sneak peek into some of the upcoming features in Connext DDS that aim to simplify the development of SOA and perform a live demonstration that showcases a few examples of these applications.

    Building on Part 1 in this series, this session provides a deeper view into some of the fundamental building blocks of Data Distribution ServiceTM (DDS) and how they relate to the Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA).

    One of the significant advantages of DDS for GVA is that it is an open standard. The fundamental operation of DDS is non-proprietary, and it is designed to ensure interconnectivity between different implementations and systems. These core principles of DDS align perfectly with the purposes for which the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) first developed the GVA standard.

    An additional benefit of the DDS open standard is that it is continuously evolving. This could be challenging, yet GVA has shown itself to be ready to evolve to leverage important features from newly-released DDS-related standards from the Object Management Group (OMG).

    In this webinar, we will discuss some of the features of DDS that are of critical importance to GVA. We will also explore some of the newer features introduced in the latest versions of the OMG specifications that govern DDS.

  • GVA and DDS: Lowering Cost and Driving Innovation in Land Vehicle Platforms Recorded: Jun 23 2020 56 mins

    In 2010, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) released the first version of their General Vehicle Architecture standard (Def Stan 23-009), more widely known as GVA. The GVA standard defined a set of requirements for the development of military vehicles based on a single cohesive and logically connected architecture. The motivation was to reduce risk and costs through the entire vehicle life cycle, while at the same time improving equipment capability through better integration and scalability.

    Today, the UK MoD mandates the use of the GVA standard for all future land vehicle platforms and upgrade programmes. The GVA approach is currently also being followed by many other nations, as well by NATO through its NGVA programme.

    The success of GVA is a fine example of the benefit of adopting open standards. And one of the most critical open standards specified in GVA is Data Distribution ServiceTM (DDS), which is used as the underlying software framework for vehicle development. In turn, the data model that underpins DDS is itself woven into the GVA solution through the Land Data Model, which the MoD defines and maintains.

    The AUTOSAR Consortium has recently adopted Data Distribution ServiceTM (DDS) as a connectivity standard for its next-generation Adaptive Platform. In combination with the ara::com API, DDS enables Adaptive applications to achieve reliable, scalable and secure communications leveraging a rich set of Quality of Service (QoS) policies, while adhering to the semantics of ara::com's service-oriented architecture.

    In this webinar, we’ll explore the integration of DDS into the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform. We’ll highlight the most salient use cases for the combination of DDS and AUTOSAR Adaptive. Also, we’ll focus on RTI's reference implementation of the DDS network binding for the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform Demonstrator, and illustrate how it can be easily integrated with the RTI Connext ecosystem.     Connext DDS Secure 6.0 introduces a robust set of security capabilities to your system including authentication, encryption, access control, and logging. Thanks to its support of secure multicast, Connext DDS Secure 6.0 enables efficient and scalable distribution of data to many subscribers. Performance is also optimized, because Connext DDS Secure 6.0 enables fine-grained control over the level of security applied to each data flow, such as whether encryption or just data integrity is required.

    Connext DDS Secure 6.0 presents new capabilities beyond Connext DDS Secure 5.3, which was the first general-access release that fully supported the DDS Security specification. Today, Connext DDS Secure 6.0 supports more use cases and the latest OMG Data Distribution ServiceTM (DDS) Security specification (1.1).

    In this webinar, Jose Lopez-Vega, Connext DDS Secure product lead, will introduce you to the RTI Security Plugins, which support the Connext DDS Secure implementation of the OMG DDS Security specification.   • Using XML Application Creation to simplify development in RTI Connext DDS Micro Recorded: Sep 25 2019 45 mins

    XML-Based Application Creation is a mechanism to simplify and accelerate the development and programming of Connext DDS applications. User systems can be easily prototyped on a PC using Connext DDS Pro and quickly migrated to the final hardware. This can be useful in many situations. For example, autonomous vehicle developers using Connext DDS Micro 3.0.0 have a direct path to ASIL D safety-certified systems.

    Connext DDS supports the use of XML for the complete system definition. This includes not only the definition of the data types and Quality of Service (QoS) settings, but also the definition of the Topics, DomainParticipants, and all the Entities they contain (Publishers, Subscribers, DataWriters and DataReaders). XML-Based Application Creation is already supported by Connext DDS Professional.

    Starting with RTI Connext DDS 6.0.0, XML-Based Application Creation can also be used to configure Connext DDS Micro applications through a utility called RTI Micro Application Generator (MAG). MAG generates source code from an XML configuration file that will be used to create DDS entities and registers all the components needed for a Connext DDS Micro-based application.
