The University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites you to a virtual conversation with 2014 Carolina graduate Eric Garcia about his new book, “We’re Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation.”
In the book, Garcia uses his reporter’s eye and insider’s perspective to chronicle the state of autism in America. Part manifesto, part memoir and part reported essay, “We’re Not Broken” sees Garcia weave together personal anecdotes, interviews and the latest scientific research to debunk the most pernicious misconceptions about autism and show that autistic people are everywhere—from dating apps to workplaces to Congress—and deserve to have a say in the policies and structures shaping their lives. 
Garcia is autistic and knows firsthand the consequence of policies that he says have wrongfully focused on finding a cure for autism. That is something, he says, that autistic people don't want and never asked for. His book asks: Instead of prioritizing trying to “fix” autistic people, what can we do to make their lives better?
Garcia is a journalist based in Washington, D.C. Previously, he was an assistant editor at the Washington Post's Outlook section, an associate editor at The Hill and a correspondent for National Journal, MarketWatch and Roll Call. He has also written for the Daily Beast, the New Republic and Salon.com.

Addressing a need that affects over the drinking water in North Carolina, as well as 1.8 billion people worldwide, the Sustainable Access to Clean Water Creativity Hub is pursuing the development of an innovative, affordable membrane-based water purification tool that can safely remove a broad range of water contaminants.

The project team is comprised of polymer chemists, computational modelers, and engineers from the College of Arts & Sciences’ applied physical sciences and mathematics departments and the Gillings School of Global Public Health. Building on graphene and graphene oxide nanocomposite membrane technology developed by the Dingemans lab, the team aims to develop new filters that make water purification more energy efficient. The new technology will lay a foundation for large-scale, affordable membrane production and be used for a whole range of pollutants – including removal of heavy metals which can be extracted and then reused.

2021 University Research Week | Access to Clean Water

Employing expertise from UNC’s School of Medicine, the Gillings School of Global Public Health, and the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, the Rapidly Emerging Antiviral Drug Development Initiative (READDI), an open-science, nonprofit drug research and development organization, is creating “self-stable” antiviral therapeutics for each of the main virus families. The therapeutics will be poised for rapid development against new pandemic viruses as they emerge.

READDI is the evolution of an interdisciplinary research known as the Infectious Disease Discovery Program at UNC (ID3@UNC), which was awarded funding through the Creativity Hubs initiative in 2019. Having a team already in place allowed the group to respond nimbly and quickly to the coronavirus outbreak and identify more partners to help in the fight against it.

2021 University Research Week | READDI for the Next Pandemic

The Dynamics of Extreme Events, People, and Places (DEEPP) Hub brings together social and natural scientists, engineers, public policy researchers, and data analysts to investigate extreme weather events from all angles, including impacts on health and well-being, economic hardships, and environmental harm.

Using satellite imagery, geophysical models, and survey data, the team hopes to document the short- and long-term impacts of flood events and how people recover from them to help North Carolinians and other coastal communities prepare for the coming decades — and the storms they’ll continue to face.

This annual lectureship was established by Harold and Carol Kohn to honor the contributions of former UNC Pharmacy School alumni, to recognize faculty and staff who have empowered alumni achievements, and to inspire current students. Before his retirement from Carolina in 2015, Dr. Kohn was a Kenan Distinguished Professor and faculty in the division of chemical biology and medicinal chemistry and the UNC department of chemistry.

George Abercrombie, class of ’78 (B.S. Pharm), is the first recipient of this esteemed lectureship. Abercrombie served as President and Chief Executive Officer at Hoffmann-La Roche from 2001-2009. He has also held a variety of leadership roles in the pharmaceutical industry at Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, and Innoviva Pharmaceutical Company. Abercrombie is currently President of Abercrombie Advisors LLC and an adjunct professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

The 2020 Eve Marie Carson Lecture is featuring Karen Parker ’65, the first African American woman undergraduate to attend Carolina. Karen will speak about trailblazing a path as a student at Carolina during the civil rights movement and how those experiences shaped and prepared her for an illustrious career in journalism that took her to leading newsrooms across the country. A Q&A moderated by Susan King, dean of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, will follow. The annual Eve Carson Lecture is presented by the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council in partnership with the Will Froelich Honors Fellows.

•Lori Carter-Edwards ’95, PhD, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, is leading the COVID-19 Community Engaged Risk Communication Project, leveraging rural, Black, faith-based social connections to spread critical COVID-19 information.
•Melissa Miller, PhD, UNC School of Medicine, led the development of a rapid-result COVID-19 test that increased statewide testing capacity — her lab is currently processing 2,500 tests a day.
•Timothy Sheahan, PhD, UNC Gillings, works on the development and testing of prominent coronavirus treatments, including the successful antiviral remdesivir.

Leveraging the strengths of Carolina’s schools of public health and medicine, its affiliated research centers and institutes, and its prowess in big data management, the Heterogeneity in Obesity Creativity Hub: Transdisciplinary Approaches for Precision Research and Treatment, a large, collaborative project with 27 faculty from 16 departments, six schools and five centers and institutes. The project focuses on understanding why two people who consume the same diets and exercise equally can have very different susceptibility to weight gain, with the aim of developing treatment approaches that go far beyond the “one-size-fits-all” approach that is so common.
