About this talk

The shift to renewable energy is crucial to halt global warming. Though operating wind farms in busy industrial areas is part of the solution, it comes with a specific set of challenges. Vleemo operates 34 wind turbines in the port of Antwerp, Europe's 2nd-biggest port. They are driven by optimizing turbine output while respecting regulatory boundaries to minimize impact on the surrounding industrial area. We present how we increased revenue, reduced costs and paved the way for advanced analytics using Digital Twins and Edge Computing, all built with open source software. Digital Twins of all turbines and their surroundings act on real-time turbine data to optimize turbine control. Edge Computing allows Vleemo to run a backup algorithm for worst-case scenarios. As a result, Vleemo was able to decrease operating costs with 20% and decrease lost revenue due to unplanned downtime with 3%.
