A digital twin provides a virtual representation of the physical wind farm, synchronized at a high frequency and fidelity. Using IoT devices, sensors, and communication protocols, the ROC collects data from wind turbines and equipment.

DTC Use Case: A Digital Twin-Based Remote Operations Center for Wind Farms

How to Leverage the Virtual Twin Experience in Real-life; With Industry Examples

In order to identify strategies for bringing carbon emissions under control, one of the first steps we need to take as a technology community is to measure the actual emissions. Emissions caused by Scope 1 (fossil fuel burning) and Scope 2 (electricity consumed during production) are relatively easy to measure. 
 
Unfortunately, measuring Scope 3 emissions has presented a major challenge. Scope 3 emissions are important because they make up 80% of all carbon output during the manufacturing process. Produced across the supply chain and distribution network, Scope 3 emissions include carbon generated by logistics, raw material, the carbon footprint of parts used, and so on.

Digital Twin Platform Stack Architectural Framework

Systems Modeling Language™ v2 (SysML® v2), whose beta version was just adopted by our Board of Directors and is currently in its finalization phase, will enable modeling of increasingly complex systems as part of the evolving practice of model-based systems engineering, and provide improved precision, expressiveness, consistency, usability, interoperability, and extensibility over SysML v1.

The collection of SysML v2 specifications were submitted to the OMG Board of Directors for approval as beta specifications and have entered their finalization phase. The SysML v2 submission concluded five years of development with representation from over 80 organizations, resulting in three specifications and an open-source pilot implementation to validate them. It is anticipated that the final adopted specifications will be approved by the OMG in 2024 and that some of the tool vendors will have commercial SysML v2 implementations available at that time.

This webinar includes two parts presented by the co-leaders of the SysML v2 Submission Team. The first part includes an overview of SysML v2 capabilities and a comparison of SysML v2 with SysML v1, while the second part addresses some of the key language design decisions that led to the current specifications and the rationale for those decisions.

DTC Tech Showcase: Emergency Communication Services

Today’s manufacturing lines require remote verification of manufacturing components in real-time, as they are conveyed across the factory. In this use case, featured in the DTC's Technology Showcase, a digital twin of a manufacturing cell enables manipulation and quality control inspection of manufacturing cells using Virtual Reality. 

The goal of the project is to increase the flexibility of manufacturing lines to adapt them to today’s remote inspection scenarios. This prevents stopping production when an operator is remotely located.

Dr. Ander García will overview outcomes including:
A digital twin of the manufacturing cell that can be manipulated and inspected.
A realistic demonstrator that includes real-time remote operators.
 Improvements required in the post-Covid manufacturing world, notably operator location flexibility.
Tracking of energy efficiency, performance metrics, and maintainability of the manufacturing line.

Dr. García is the Lead of Connectivity and Cloud/Edge Computing Research Line at Vicomtech, where he has worked since 2003. He currently works for the Data Intelligence for Energy and Industrial Processes department, leading the Connectivity and Cloud/Edge research line. He is an associated professor at the University of the Basque Country and the University of Deusto.
