The essence of reality capture is to provide insight and awareness through the faithful and transparent representation of real-world conditions. If well-executed, laser scans help to resolve issues and make decisions. In 2022, however, while scanning is more affordable and more accessible, the results are highly dependent on the hardware and software, requiring the expertise of the operator to navigate both. 
 
To spur the industry to embrace reality capture data, the new Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) Working Group (formerly the Infrastructure Working Group) recently published a DTC whitepaper entitled “Reality Capture: A Digital Twin Foundation.”  

The paper defines a maturity model for reality capture and introduces the fundamentals of reality capture as a critical component to the lifecycle of a digital twin.  During this webinar the authors will explain how reality capture tools can accurately and efficiently create digital duplicates of physical things, such as small objects, rooms, buildings, or planetary landscapes,  explore the reasons data capture is not more fully embraced, and propose a path forward.

The Digital Twin Capabilities Periodic Table (CPT) is an architecture- and technology-agnostic requirements definition framework. It is aimed at organizations that want to design, develop, deploy, and operate Digital Twins based on use case capability requirements versus the features of technology solutions. The Digital Twin CPT provides the framework for Composable Digital Twins (CDT) that deliver service-based orchestration with faster time to value by reusing packaged business capabilities to develop and adapt applications as business requirements evolve.


The Digital Twin CPT framework facilitates collaboration in multidisciplinary or fusion teams that need to create Digital Twins requirements specifications in large-scale complex environments. The framework keeps the focus on the capability requirements of individual use cases, which can then be aggregated to determine the overall capability requirements of digital twin platforms and other technology solutions that are required to address the specific business needs. 

It follows a Period Table approach with capabilities grouped or “clustered” around common characteristics. It is easy to interpret both in the boardroom when explaining the business case to get funding for a Digital Twin project, and on the shopfloor when gathering requirements for a Digital Twin application. It provides visual guidance for collaboration, brainstorming, and making capability requirements explicit.
