Nowadays, VMs are being used not just for application servers but also for mission critical database workloads as well. Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and Postgres all run well in virtual machines. The benefits of running database workloads in VMs can be many including the ability to move the database easily for hardware upgrades and patching, ease of scaling and even migrations to the cloud.
