Over recent years governments around the world, including the UK, have been forced to act against those attempting to misuse our financial systems. 

On the 1st of March this year, the introduction of the new ‘Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Bill’ is the first step in the government’s plan to improve transparency of ownership of companies and property to dissuade criminals from investing their money in the UK.

To add to this, on 28 February 2022, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) published a consultation on strengthening the UK’s framework for companies - ‘Corporate Transparency and Register Reform White paper’.

Female-founded FinTech’s accounted for 17% of the UK’s total FinTech venture capital (VC) investments throughout 2020. Although this figure is up 6% from 2019, it still shows a need for improvement.

Outside of FinTech, just 17% of business founders are female and of pitch-decks reaching VC firms, only 5% are from all-female teams (in comparison to 75% all male). To break it down even further, for every £1 of VC investment in the UK, all-female founder teams get less than 1p! 

Lack of diversity in VC funding is just one of the challenges faced by female founders in the RegTech industry. Women are significantly underrepresented in entrepreneurship; it is said that up to £250 billion of new value could be added to the UK economy if women started and scaled new businesses at the same rate as UK men. Think of what that could do for the RegTech industry!
