HOT TOPIC: Why now for Investment Trusts

Equity release has demonstrated its resilience even as the country has
faced multiple crisis while building in more consumer protections says
Jane Mullan, national field sales manager at Pure Retirement in this
interview with Octo Members.

The interview gives an analysis of the equity release market before a
wider debate involving the Equity Release Council and Equity Release Associates TO BE PUBLISHED MID NOVEMBER

Mullan says that currently there is a little less borrowing as
interest rates have increased, but she believes the long-term
prospects remain bright as demand increases and the now regulated
market continues to make improvements to its products and services.

The need is certainly there. Equity release has always been a solution
for the asset rich and cash poor and that is, if anything, becoming a
more significant driver given the current situation regarding the cost
of living.

She also believes there has been a shift in perception among both
advisers and intermediaries regarding the market with regulation and
lots of important work done by the governing body Equity Release
Council.

In terms of client needs, she says equity release can for example help
when an interest only mortgage coming to an end, it could be a matter
of helping children with house deposit, which can help with IHT
mitigation as while many people reaching retirement want to do a lot
more than just sitting back and relaxing.

Looking at the market more generally, she adds: “It is a far cry from
being a last resort and a fantastic solution, not just for individuals
but also for families as well. There is a fundamental shift in
perceptions, which mean that later life products and advice and client
education need to keep evolving as well, so we can continue to be part
 of the holistic advice conversation.”

Octo Members brought together a multi-asset specialist and a global equity fund manager to debate the issue with Vincent McEntegart, investment manager in Aegon’s Multi-Asset Investing team and manager of the Aegon Diversified Monthly Income Fund and Graham Campbell, CEO at Saracen Fund Managers and co-manager of the Global Income & Growth Fund offering their views and analysis.

Assessing the situation, Campbell said: “Clients are definitely concerned, and looking at portfolios, because they're worried about inflation. And for those of us who remember high inflation, we also remember how difficult it is - once it starts - to be eradicated. 

Advisers are interested in sheltering their clients from inflation but also looking at the balance of portfolios perhaps moving from a growth towards a more value approach as well.”

In this broad ranging debate the panel discuss the role of central banks, the challenges ahead for different economies and markets, the signs to look out for and the opportunities.

Hot Topic: Income from Multi Asset

In our recent Octo Members’ panel ‘Investing in Infrastructure’, an adviser, fund selector and fund manager debated the place of infrastructure in portfolios in terms of mitigating the current inflation effects but also the asset class’s role as part of broader strategic asset allocation. 

Kerry Nelson, CEO of Nexus IFA, Josh McCathie manager of the VT Downing Listed Infrastructure Income Fund and Richard Philbin, Chief Investment Officer, Hawksmoor Investment Management also discussed the drivers behind infrastructure investing from the high correlation of other assets and the search for yield through to the need to harness private capital to drive the energy transition. 

An asset in transition
McCathie highlighted the big shift in the last decade from being an asset that mainly featured in private markets to public markets, but which has now expanded in the past three or four years from core utility grade infrastructure to all sorts of categories including digital infrastructure. 

The panel then discussed the merits of infrastructure in terms of tactical but also longer-term strategic asset allocation. 

McCathie said that had been a lot of debate around 60:40 portfolios. 

Nelson added: “Everything has been so correlated in the last 18 months and never more so than in the last six. 

You've got to look at other asset classes and investment solutions, to give an alternative that gives some diversification and behaves differently to what bonds are doing, what equities and what cash are doing. 

What is the definition?
The definition does pose a challenge however. 

The panel also felt that infrastructure investors were being drawn in for reasons of inflation hedging, diversification but also because it would likely meet some of the criteria for ESG and impact investing given its crucial role in the energy transition but at least for the latter some of the decisions still rest with the FCA.
