The New P&L speaks to Criminologist & Founder of Urban AI, Renée Cummings

The impact of AI on all aspects of our life is far-reaching. AI has incredible potential, and when and designed and developed with ethical principles underpinning it, AI can have a transformational effect on communities and businesses in many ways. But AI is not without bias – it can often carry with it the subjective assumptions and judgements of those developing it or built on data that reinforces some of the structural inequalities that exist in our businesses and our societies.

This week, The New P&L speaks to eminent criminologist, criminal psychologist, AI ethicist and data activist, Renée Cummings. Renée specialises in diverse, equitable and inclusive AI design, development and deployment; principled, responsible and trustworthy AI strategy and ethical AI policy development and governance, as well as AI risk management and crisis communications. We discuss with Renée the challenges around bias in AI and how these can be overcome, as well as regulation of this sector; what a more ethical future for AI looks like and what type of leaders we need in business to get us there.

Paul Spiers, Founder, The New P&L - Principles & Leadership in Business Podcast series
Leadership in times of adversity and the ability to excel in a crisis, such as the one we face globally as a result of the pandemic, requires a specific set of characteristics. • The New P&L speaks to speaks to Negotiations Ninja podcast host, Mark Raffan Recorded: Aug 3 2020 48 mins
Paul Spiers, Founder, The New P&L - Principles & Leadership in Business Podcast series
Successful commercial negotiations are clearly one of the key drivers for business growth - you sell more products for the right price and you set your business on a firm foundation for the future. However, these negotiations so often seem to be a zero sum game, with one or both parties feeling aggrieved at the final outcome, which clearly doesn't set the right tone for a positive ongoing business relationship or partnership. This pressure to 'win the business at all costs' is only going to be accentuated by financial pressures placed on businesses by the pandemic.

This week, The New P&L - Principles & Leadership in Business podcast series speaks to Mark Raffan - host of the world's number one negotiations podcast, Negotiations Ninja, and founder the Negotiations Ninja training group. We discuss with Mark how a more principled approach to the negotiation process can help sales teams and business owners work towards achieving more balanced outcomes in the commercial negotiations process to the mutual benefit of both parties.

Paul Spiers, Founder, The New P&L - Principles & Leadership in Business Podcast series
Social entrepreneurship is on the rise, driven by those whose passion and purpose it is to affect real change in society. The evolution of social entrepreneurship over recent years has also demonstrated that ‘not-for-profit’ doesn’t and shouldn’t mean ‘no profit’; as profitability is vital for the ongoing funding of the purpose that sits at the heart of these important organisations.

  • How to make the complex more simple Recorded: Jul 29 2020 5 mins
Paul Spiers, Founder, The New P&L - Principles & Leadership in Business Podcast series
As adults, and especially as business people, we often have a tendency to over-complicate our lives: business is notorious for this with its relentless commitment to an ever growing array of acronyms, methodologies and processes – and most of us are guilty of embracing them, often in a vain attempt to ‘big ourselves up’.

However, this pandemic is forcing many of us – some unfortunately through necessity and some via the luxury of the extra time they now have - to seriously re-evaluate what is actually important to us; what we genuinely need in our lives – what adds to it, not takes from it.

This week, Paul Spiers, host of The New P&L – Principles and Leadership in Business podcast series, discusses how a random conversation with his son inspired him to stop and think about why we seem to consistently try and make the simple more complex.

Principles & Leadership in Business
We believe business needs a ‘New P&L’: one that is focused as much on ‘Principles and Leadership’ as it is on ‘Profit and Loss’, because we know that if your Principles are right and aligned with your purpose, and your Leadership has clarity of vision and is strong, focused and empathetic, then your business will be in profit and not in loss in so many ways.

Each week on The New P&L podcast, we interview a diverse range of entrepreneurs, business leaders and social impact investors on their views and opinions on the importance of Principles and Leadership in business, discussing how we can all work towards building more ethical, productive, collaborative and ultimately, successful and principled businesses - ones that encourage great, inspirational leaders and motivated teams.
