Fund Selection Techniques

The mutual fund industry has 38 fund categories with more than 1,000 schemes. Within each category, there are funds which are run with different style and mandates. Thus, shortlisting funds can be overwhelming. Typically, many investors tend to follow the herd when it comes to choosing funds.

Morningstar Direct is powerful research software that offers in depth data, trends and reports which make sifting funds easier. Further, fund selection is neither pure science nor purely an art. The answer lies somewhere in between. Building a robust fund selection framework through a rigorous quantitative shortlisting tool must be augmented with a thorough qualitative analysis to pick funds.

In the forthcoming webinar to be held on Wednesday, 26th May 2021 at 4 PM IST, Gaurav Awasthi, Senior Partner, Product Development at IIFL Wealth, and Roopali Prabhu, Chief Investment Officer at Sanctum Wealth Management will share how they use Morningstar Direct to enhance their research capabilities and select the right funds for their clients. The session will be moderated by Kaustubh Belapurkar, Director – Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Adviser India.

  • 2021 Global Liquid Alternatives Landscape Jul 28 2021 2:30 pm UTC 30 mins
Francesco Paganelli & Erol Alitovski, Senior Manager Research Analysts, Morningstar
Liquid alternative funds are still relatively young, but they still had $500 billion in assets globally as of April 30, 2021, according to Morningstar data. Investors, however, still lack awareness of these funds' challenges and risks, and often fail to form realistic expectations for them. Chasing good and fleeing poor performance chasing has been rampant, causing wild swings in asset flows among funds and in and out of the asset class.

Alternative strategies still can play a role to play in investors' portfolios, but they need to better understand their potential benefits. In this webinar, you will learn about the key learnings of our '2021 Global Liquid Alternatives Landscape'-analysis and we explain some of the reasons for liquid alternative strategies' recent performance challenges.

    Srikanth Bhagavat, Hexagon
While paying a fee for advice is still not prevalent in India, the trend is changing.

With the regulatory push towards advisory, distributors are realising that they need to adapt their business models and charge fee by showcasing their value add.

But are clients willing to pay fee?
How can advisers convince clients to pay fee?
How to show your value add?
Is it possible to sustain an advisory practice solely by charging fee from clients?

To answer these questions, Srikanth Bhagavat, Managing Director & Principal Advisor of Hexagon Wealth, will join us for an interactive webinar on July 15, 2021 at 4 pm. He will share how he is transitioning to a 100% fee-only practice. So do not miss this chance to interact with him.

  • Morningstar’s Q3 2021 US Stock Market Outlook Webinar – Asia Edition Recorded: Jul 8 2021 61 mins
Dave Sekera, Preston Caldwell, Adam Fleck
Morningstar’s Q3 2021 US Stock Market Outlook: Time to Trade Up in Quality

Stock prices are high, interest rates are low, and corporate credit spreads are tight. Is there anything left that’s undervalued? With the equity markets trading near record levels, will stocks continue to march ever higher? Or will the Fed take away the punch bowl? Following the rotation into value stocks thus far this year, are equity valuations of companies with Wide Economic Moats still being left behind?

As the pandemic continues to abate, the outlook for the U.S. economy remains robust and we project U.S. real GDP growth of 6.0% in 2021, 4.6% in 2022, and 3.4% in 2023. This aggressive growth is enabled by economic normalization as consumer spending shifts back to services from goods. However, inflation has reared its ugly head.

I'd like to personally invite you to join our webinar, taking place on Thursday, July 8 at 10:00 a.m. HKT / 11:00 a.m. JST, to learn why we think inflation will subside later this year and to help you understand current market dynamics and identify pockets of opportunity! You will also hear more details on our ESG Risk Rating Assessment in partnership with Sustainalytics.

In this continuation of our popular quarterly Market Outlook series, we’ll cover:
    • Key valuation context that will help you explain the stock market outlook to your clients
    • Provide an update regarding our revised outlook for the U.S. economy and inflation
    • Review content enhancements we are implementing to include Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues into our analysis

  • Morningstar ESG Conclave - Session 1 - Understanding and Interpreting ESG Recorded: Jun 26 2021 36 mins
    Wilco van Heteren, Sustainalytics
When it comes to ratings and analytics in the ESG landscape, Sustainalytics is one of the oldest,
largest and most influential players. It provides data on 40,000 companies with ratings on 13,000 of
those, as well as monitor 172 countries.
At the core of the research is the understanding that material ESG issues play a central role in a
risk-based approach to valuation. Analysis is conducted on whether companies are involved in
controversies such as human rights abuses and environmental mishaps. Besides quantifying ethical
dilemmas, the analysts evaluate the long-term risks, how much of that risk is well managed by a
company, and how much remains unmanaged.
A look at how the research translates into company-level ESG ratings.
  • Morningstar ESG Conclave - Session 2 - Why ESG is here to stay Recorded: Jun 24 2021 36 mins
    Hortense Bioy, Morningstar
Over the past few years, there has been a paradigm shift in how ESG is being perceived. It has
evolved from an exclusionary form of investing to a much more visionary and inclusive outlook.
ESG investing does not propose being good for goodness’s sake, it advocates being good in order to
become rich. It gravitates towards higher quality companies with a stronger balance sheet,
companies that are run better and operate more efficiently.
As investors accelerate into sustainable investments, what must they be aware of and what
misconceptions must be laid to rest?
  • Morningstar ESG Conclave - Session 3 - The ESG Regulatory Journey Recorded: Jun 24 2021 34 mins
    Andy Pettit, Morningstar
Surging investor appetite for sustainable investments means that rules on disclosure will become
    increasingly important.
This year, the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosures Regulation came into effect. New European rules
on climate and other sustainable-finance issues require asset managers to disclose the potential
harm their investments could do to the environment and society. The Biden Administration will also give expanded attention and regulation when it comes to environmental, social and governance
    issues at American businesses.
What are the implications and what can we expect going ahead?
  • Morningstar ESG Conclave - Session 4 - Is India ready for ESG? Recorded: Jun 24 2021 42 mins
Navneet Munot, HDFC AMC / Nilesh Shah, Kotak AMC / Nimish Shah, Waterfield Advisors
The coronavirus has splintered the world economy, exposing social responsibility and governance
fault lines across continents. This is a crisis unlike anything we’ve seen. Consequently, social and
governance elements are going to be more important when it comes to looking for investing
opportunities. How is the ESG investing landscape evolving in India?
With no standardized definition of ESG criteria, they are often adjusted depending on the
perception of asset management companies. Firms also develop their own methodology to assign
    ESG ratings.
A look at the challenges and opportunities.

Matthew Radgowski Head of Client Solutions, Aron Szapiro Head of Policy Research, Jason Stipp Director of Product Management
Increasing regulations are putting new explicit and implicit requirements on financial advisors to deliver best interest advice and document how they’ve done so. This entails not only understanding the client’s current accounts, including 401(k) plan lineups and services in more detail but also aligning portfolios more tightly to client goals and risk profiles.
While these new requirements may add steps to the advisor’s workflow, with the right tools, approach and processes, they can also provide an opportunity to add value for clients and build trust by demonstrating that you fully understand their current accounts, risk comfort, and financial goals.
