Dr. Erica Eckert, Assistant Dean for Assessment at Kent State University

About this talk

When people talk about assessment, they are often talking about measurement. Measurement is an absolutely critical component to the assessment process. The achievement of outcomes cannot be reported if the measurement tools are inappropriate. This webinar will discuss the terms “direct” and “indirect” as they apply to types of evidence or measures created to collect data on the achievement of outcomes. (Spoiler alert: the “direct-ness” of a measure is determined by its relationship to the outcome.) Direct measures are generally accepted as “better” for outcomes assessment, however, they are not always possible. Indirect measures will also be discussed as a means to provide additional support to outcomes measurement.
