The government are planning to phase out Direct Payments (common agricultural policy subsides) to farmers by 2024. The funds from Direct Payments will be redirected to environmental schemes most notable ELMs, Environmental Land Management Scheme. Clearly, this is giant shift from supporting food production to improving the environment. This webinar will take a deep look at the potential changes and the implications to the insurance industry. Speaker bio: Graham Plaister Principal Specialist – Agriculture & Rural Graham started his career managing the family’s traditional dairy farm developing the herd into large production unit comprising 250 pedigree Holstein cattle of high genetic merit. The herd was ranked in the top 4% and won a national competition for management and profitability. In 1999 he started diversifying the farm by replacing the dairy herd with a horse livery enterprise, beef herd and change of use of farm buildings to rural commercial lets. The beef herd comprised of Hereford and Aberdeen Angus store cattle supplying Waitrose Supermarkets. The horse livery enterprise was set up providing facilities for 30 horses. In 2001 Graham was asked to become an honorary farm assessor for a Mutual Insurance Company. In 2003 Graham joined firm of loss adjusters, where he put his specialist knowledge to good use. Graham has significant practical and technical knowledge on livestock, equine and arable crops along with farm diversification. He is a member of British Institute of Agricultural Consultant and the Agricultural Law Association.
