A recent survey by the American Psychological Association revealed that 78% of respondents said the pandemic was a major stressor for them, with 9% of respondents having been diagnosed with a mental health disorder since the start of the pandemic. As healthcare costs continue to rise and access to medical care remains a challenge, we are at a critical point with respect to US mental health.   People with chronic conditions often suffer from low self-esteem. Adapting to life with a long-term health condition and dealing with the associated stigma can seriously damage a person’s sense of self-worth. The National Association for Self-Esteem describes good self-esteem as feeling “capable of meeting life’s challenges and being worthy of happiness.” For employers, failing to support people with chronic conditions and those struggling with mental health means missing out on the full potential that employees have to offer. Aside from the global pandemic caused by the coronavirus, a recent poll by the American Psychological Association suggests that stress, trauma and changes to lifestyle are causing immense strain on our mental and physical health, and could trigger a secondary health crisis. 

For many, the stress of the pandemic has resulted in unintentional weight gain. A recent report by the American Psychological Association found that 42% of US adults gained an average of 29 pounds last year, and while weight gain in and of itself is not unhealthy, excess weight can increase the risk of developing chronic health conditions, like heart disease, diabetes and stroke. 

As we start to move into the ‘new normal,’ employers need to be aware of the emotional and physical toll that the pandemic has caused.  Adapting benefits packages to help employees with weight gain and management of chronic conditions are examples of the steps employers can take to acknowledge and tackle the difficulties employees are facing.

Supporting Employees to Manage Post-Lockdown Weight Gain in the U.S.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives every year. In the US, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women across most racial and ethnic groups, causing approximately 655,000 deaths each year.
