M.2 SSDs were originally created as an alternative to mSATA SSDs -- but, they didn’t totally replace them. M.2 SSDs have their time and place in specific applications and memory requirements, but mSATA is still used for certain devices and applications. And, M.2 SSDs have a ways to go if they ever want to reign champion in enterprise use cases.
