Chapter Chat: Implementing Successful Certification Study Groups

Learn how the (ISC)2 Quad Cities Chapter partnered with colleges and other nonprofit associations to produce an annual cybersecurity conference, Kid’s STEM/Cybersecurity Camps, as well as host monthly Cybersocials. They have been able to reach hundreds of people in the local community with a goal of hitting 1,000 this year!

Bringing the Chapter membership from 1300 to 2100+ from 2020 to 2022.

Chapter Chat: Leveraging Virtual Tools to Build Community

While it is hard enough to convince security professionals to join a local (ISC)² chapter when they are faced with competing family/work priorities, it can be even harder to retain them.  Many members are usually enthusiastic about an organization when they first join, but more often than not, life gets in the way and their priorities or interests shift and either decide not to renew their membership or take a more passive role.  It can be even more challenging for a chapter, when most of your interactions with your members have to be conducted remotely. 

Over the past year, the (ISC)² New Jersey Chapter has determined that the key driver to keeping its members active is through personal engagement. Providing CPE credits for your meetings might keep some members around, but if a member does not feel personally connected with an organization and feel that they are providing some benefit to being there, competing priorities will often prevail.  

During this Chapter Chat session, you will learn techniques on how to maintain a high retention rate with your members, how to make your organization scalable and still personal, and how to empower your members to become champions of your chapter’s mission and vision.

Speaker's Bio:
Ken Fishkin leads the information security and data privacy programs for the national law firm, Lowenstein Sandler, where he mitigates their security and privacy risks to comply with client and regulatory requirements. He is President of the New Jersey Chapter of (ISC)² and is also on the Executive and Threat Intelligence Committees of the Legal Services Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (LS-ISAO). Ken is also a volunteer with the Cybersecurity Workforce Alliance (CWA), which mentors high school and college students who are breaking into the cybersecurity field. He periodically presents at conferences to educate audiences about the evolving cybersecurity and privacy landscape.

It is a challenge for a volunteer chapter organization to maintain and grow their membership, let alone provide their communities with a source for cybersecurity expertise. Officers and members have a lot going on so why add more to their agendas? How do we address these challenges, enhance our membership engagement, and show our community that (ISC)² chapters can help? By planning and executing a robust marketing and outreach plan, it will help chapters fulfill objectives in their chapter’s charter while providing both members and the community with mutual benefits. 

In this talk, Patrick J. Sullivan, Membership Chair from the (ISC)² Middle Georgia Chapter, will discuss some challenges facing chapters today, why marketing and outreach should be a stated goal and practiced activity for chapters, some ways to get started, and some activities to consider.

Presenters Bio
Patrick J Sullivan is Director, Xacta Support Services at Telos Corporation and part-time faculty at Middle Georgia State University. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran with over 23 years of experience in cybersecurity policy, technical implementation, and management. He has a MS, BS, AAS degrees in Information Systems and maintains CISSP, CEH, CHFI, AWS cloud and MS Azure Cloud certifications. In his current role, he supports Telos’s Xacta suite of security software in on premise and cloud environments.  He has experience securing IT systems in private industry, USAF, U.S. Navy, U.S. Intelligence Community as a Cybersecurity leader and practitioner. Mr. Sullivan is Co-Founder and past president, current Membership Chair of the (ISC)² Middle Georgia Chapter, a member of the MGA, member of (ISC)² Chapter Advisory Committee.

Within the ever-growing and changing world of cybersecurity, networking is one aspect that has been important over the years for many professionals. Networking in the sense of communicating, collaborating, and supporting each other and not in the switch, router, and Layer 2 or 3 sense. This particular trait has been influential within the foundation of the (ISC)² chapters. The concepts of Connect, Educate, Inspire, and Secure are the pillars of the chapter's foundation and are crucial to its success. In the first of a new series of webinars, James McQuiggan, CISSP and Chapter President of Central Florida Chapter, which received the 2019 Chapter Recognition Award will discuss the importance of these pillars and how it relates to the Central Florida Chapter. James will also share his insights into the chapter program and the importance of it to our communities.

James McQuiggan, CISSP, is a 20 year security veteran and a Security Awareness Advocate for KnowBe4. James is also a part time faculty professor at Valencia College in the Engineering, Computer Programming & Technology Division. Within the Central Florida community, he is the President of the Central Florida (ISC)2 Chapter and a Trustee Board member with the Center for Cyber Safety and Education. James has worked as a Product & Solution Security Officer, Information Security analyst and a network security engineer. He consulted and supported various corporate divisions on cybersecurity standards, information security awareness and securing product networks.
