The transformational changes on our horizon, we’re told, are smarter AIs, faster computation engines, and new tools that make it easier to store, catalog, process, stream, and analyze data. Our future, it seems, depends on the technologies we build.

I believe we should envision the future through a different lens. As a data community, we should be asking ourselves: What experiences do we want to create?

In this talk, I’ll talk about the past and future of the modern data stack—not as a collection of tools or as an architectural diagram, but as an experience. The talk will describe how the current stack can create experiential chaos, offer a proposal for what we can do about it, and provide a roadmap for how we can get there.

The Future is an Experience

On the surface, most people agree that data should be managed. They seem to also believe it is product like. Why, then, is it so hard to manage data as a product? During this talk, I’ll focus on key issues that block enterprises from truly treating data like a product, and suggest ideas for overcoming those blockers. No one has all the answers, but I hope this can be a starting point for these challenging discussions.
