Today, having hundreds of terabytes of data is no longer uncommon for many companies. Executives and business users alike expect access to high quality near real time data insights. New data tools are popping up almost daily offering solutions to new and old problems. Data teams cannot afford to spend years building solutions because what we do today will be legacy tomorrow. 

Let’s take a pragmatic approach by learning from the old and embracing the new while being agile and creative.

Today is Tomorrow's Legacy

The devops movement transformed system administration--once manual, painstaking work--into scalable software. One of the key breakthroughs: developing a common way to "script" behaviors across a whole set of tools so as to create coherent end-to-end workflows for their users (software developers). In the modern data stack we haven't gotten there yet, and a proliferation of disconnected tools is one of the drags on the productivity of data professionals—even those with cutting-edge tooling. Is there a path towards changing this?

Infrastructure-as-Code and the Modern Data Experience

We often think about the future in technological terms: Five years from now, what will we have invented? What magical thing will be possible that we can’t even imagine today? Data is no different. The transformational changes on our horizon, we’re told, are smarter AIs, faster computation engines, and new tools that make it easier to store, catalog, process, stream, and analyze data. Our future, it seems, depends on the technologies we build.

I believe we should envision the future through a different lens. As a data community, we should be asking ourselves: What experiences do we want to create?

In this talk, I’ll talk about the past and future of the modern data stack—not as a collection of tools or as an architectural diagram, but as an experience. The talk will describe how the current stack can create experiential chaos, offer a proposal for what we can do about it, and provide a roadmap for how we can get there.

The Future is an Experience

On the surface, most people agree that data should be managed. They seem to also believe it is product like. Why, then, is it so hard to manage data as a product? During this talk, I’ll focus on key issues that block enterprises from truly treating data like a product, and suggest ideas for overcoming those blockers. No one has all the answers, but I hope this can be a starting point for these challenging discussions.
