Rethinking The Metrics of a Sustainable & Energy Efficient Data Centre

About this talk

In this webinar, learn why the PUE model for data center efficiency is outdated and how data center IT and Facility Operations teams can work together better to achieve significantly more efficient and impactful sustainability outcomes. Typically, within the data center, there is a very clear delineation between operations teams: Those that are responsible for facility operations: providing the requisite power and cooling as demanded by the IT operations team The IT operations team who determine which products are used in their racks and are responsible for its day to day operation. Traditionally, this team is less concerned with operational efficiency as their focus is on getting the requisite power and cooling required to meet the demands placed on their infrastructure. This working relationship is often underpinned by an outdated metric called Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), a ratio that describes how efficiently a computer data center uses energy; specifically, how much energy is used by the computing equipment. PUE is the ratio of total amount of energy used by a computer data center facility to the energy delivered to computing equipment. But what PUE doesn't do is allow for visibility into the total reduction of absolute amounts of power being consumed. SoftIron believes there is an opportunity to think about this relationship and metric anew, starting with fundamentally different - more efficient hardware - that goes into the racks to begin with, in order to redress this balance. SoftIron’s unique, task-specific data center infrastructure solutions can help achieve this by drawing up to 80% less power than comparable alternatives In fact, for every 10PB of storage run on HyperDrive vs. comparable alternatives, an estimated 6,656 tonnes of CO₂ are saved by reduced energy consumption alone over its lifespan. That’s the equivalent of taking nearly 1,500 cars off the road for a year.
