Studies of AR-guided tasks are vital for developers to adopt effective techniques that boost productivity and reduce errors. However, many studies use simple tasks with non-professionals in lab settings, which do not reflect real industrial environments or the actual workforce. 
The University of Cambridge Cyber-Human Lab (CHL), led by Dr. Thomas Bohné, is addressing this by measuring how research settings impact participant behavior and effectiveness, aiming for more reliable user study outcomes.

One CHL project compared AR-guided manual assembly in lab and real workplace environments. The team developed AR systems for manual assembly, increasing task complexity, and compared results from participants—recruited from MakeUK’s apprenticeship program and representing the target industrial workforce—in both settings.

Another CHL project examined how computer vision-based error detection affects different user groups during manual assembly. The study looked at the balance between too many alerts (causing fatigue) and too few (leading to mistakes), focusing on how prediction errors in AR assembly guides influenced task performance and user perception. Three groups were studied: novices, manufacturing experts, and AR/VR experts, to see how experience levels affected their responses.

AREA Research Webinar - Measuring the impacts of AR-Guided Assembly: Lab or Workplace Setting?

Robots are increasingly tasked with navigating environments and manipulating objects, requiring careful movement planning to avoid collisions and ensure safety—especially when humans share the space. To reduce ground congestion and incidents, flying drones can complement ground robots, but their indoor movements also demand precise planning. 

Key considerations for drone path planning include safety, privacy, and minimizing disturbances such as noise or airflow. Defining virtual avoidance or permission zones for user-controlled drones is a valuable feature that can be integrated into their path planning. AR and VR displays have long enhanced drone operations by visualizing camera feeds and flight paths, especially when drones are out of direct sight. 

Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark have explored XR (extended reality) for drone path planning. An ISMAR2024 paper presents user testing results comparing handheld AR and head-worn XR headsets for planning drone tasks. The study involved developing XR applications in Unity, allowing users to perform planning tasks similar to those on desktop computers but within immersive XR interfaces.

This webinar, led by the research team, will introduce technologies for indoor robot and drone path planning using XR and present their findings. Topics include: how XR path planning considers both physical and virtual objects; the development and evaluation of the AR/XR applications; how interaction with virtual objects can improve or complicate drone path planning; and future research directions.

Visual Positioning Systems Unveiled: What Every Enterprise Needs to Know Now

Demonstrating robust technical data handling at the scale of complex product systems remains a challenge.  Causes include 

(i) the distributed-ness of production systems, 
(ii) a disconnect between the formal development of design requirements and the generation of downstream data,

(ii) data linking to support large-scale assembly, and 
(iii) semantic reasoning at scale with manufacturing data.

Unlocking XR Data: How ArborXR Insights Transforms Enterprise Training

In Augmented Reality (AR), the vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) is a significant challenge. This conflict arises when the fixed distance of a display’s image plane does not match the distance at which a user is focusing, leading to conflicting visual cues, increased eye fatigue, and reduced performance. 

Many display designs try to reduce VAC by enhancing the contrast of objects in focus, but they often rely on imprecise eye tracking or exist only as large, benchtop prototypes.

To overcome these limitations while keeping the design wearable and effective over a wide range of viewing distances, Christoph and the TU Graz research team have developed dynamic multilayer mixed reality displays. These displays combine the strengths of layered and varifocal technologies, using eye tracking to align the display layers with the user’s current focus point. 

By shifting the active viewing zone based on where the user is looking, this approach helps compensate for inaccuracies in focus distance estimation and supports a large workspace.

In this webinar, Christoph will review his previous research on dynamic multilayer displays, showcasing the concept with three wearable prototypes that each highlight a unique aspect of the Mixed Reality Spectrum. Constructed with standard components, these prototypes also feature novel algorithms - from methods that generate images at various focus levels to real-time computation of display patterns. Finally, he will discuss future research directions and the potential for integrating these systems into commercial AR solutions.

Volumetric media is a technology that enables the capture of an object or scene in three dimensions and its playback independent from the original capture position or orientation. Volumetric video is the video form of volumetric media, sometimes also called immersive video, 6DoF video, or spatial video.

In this AREA Research webinar, we will describe an approach to produce AR experiences without manual intervention, specifically in scenarios where the AR objects provide guidance to the user about something in the physical world. We propose a cognitive assistant system that can understand, reason about and respond to the physical world in AR, allowing for in-context assistance, especially for step-by-step tasks. 

We explore the system architectural needs, application requirements as well as the usability of such a technology, specifically in assisting with instruction-oriented use cases. Though LLMs are new and are still limited by accuracy, results have shown an improvement in response time of the AR assistant and only a small increase in task completion time. 

The system we will present explores the various challenges in building a platform that integrates LLMs with AR devices and examines the challenges we still have left to solve.

Tracking the movement of a camera or capture rig while simultaneously mapping the environment is a crucial requirement to enable digital reconstruction and overlay of assets in Augmented and Virtual Reality.  This problem is formally described as dense Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Current SLAM methods are often hampered by the way they represent a scene. 

What Will Be Covered

Nikhil introduces SplaTAM, an approach that leverages explicit volumetric representations, i.e., 3D Gaussians, to enable high-fidelity reconstruction from a single unposed RGB-D camera, surpassing the capabilities of existing methods.

SplaTAM employs a simple online tracking and mapping system tailored to the Gaussian representation. It utilizes a silhouette mask to elegantly capture the presence of scene density. This combination enables several benefits over prior volumetric representations, including fast rendering and optimization, determining if areas have been previously mapped, and structured map expansion by adding more Gaussians. 

Nikhil will demonstrate SplaTAM’s up to 2X superior performance in camera pose estimation, map construction, and novel-view synthesis over existing methods, paving the way for more immersive high-fidelity SLAM applications.

Nikhil will present concepts of 3D Gaussian Splatting and how it can be used to reconstruct a scene in an online fashion. The webinar will share the research results, which were performed in collaboration with researchers at CMU and MIT, and published in a peer-reviewed conference (CVPR 2024).
