(Vol. 2) Busted! The most common myths around Pensions Dashboards

Have you heard a story about twin brothers trying to trace their pensions? Same employer, same job title, same initials, same birthday. Only the National Insurance Number is... slightly different! Any fuzzy logic treats it as a typo, and we all know what follows next.

But how can we prevent this from happening?

In this webinar, the witty Andre Vermeulen explained just how important making sense of data in Financial Services is. Andre also dwelled into how 'the story of twin brothers' occurs to begin with, and why it is of particular substance, now that all the pensions providers would have to connect to Pensions Dashboards.

Then, Lisa Lyon of mypensionID was in the limelight to talk through the intricacies of data cleansing in preparation for the staging deadlines, what it takes to trace and match individuals correctly, and to prevent fraud.

Busted! The most common myths around Pensions Dashboards

In this part of the #PensionsDashboardsWeek, we invited the audience to take a breath and re-imagine pensions for the UK saver. What might the future look like?

This discussion was very insightful, with a lustrious panel of speakers who were there at the start and are now looking ahead to where Pensions Dashboards will help UK consumers in becoming more engaged with their retirement savings.

The industry's greatest minds, including Steve Webb of Lane Clark & Peacock, Tom McPhail of the lang cat, Fiona Tait of Intelligent Pensions joined this thought-provoking discussion. Moreover, we had the visionary Jon Hawkins of Bravura chairing the session.

ABOUT THE PANEL

Tom McPhail has worked in financial services since 1986 (with a brief foray into electric bikes in 2020). For 18 years, he was Head of Policy and Lead Pensions Spokesman for Hargreaves Lansdown. In 2021, Tom conducted an external review of the Money and Pensions Service on behalf of the DWP. He now works for the lang cat, providing financial services firms with strategic advice on policy issues and PR.

Steve Webb was Minister for Pensions 2010-15.  He implemented major reforms to the state pension system, oversaw the successful introduction of automatic enrolment and played a key role in the new pension freedoms. He was awarded a knighthood in 2017 and is now a partner at consultants LCP.

Fiona Tait (known as @pensionsgirlie) is currently Technical Director and PTS for Intelligent Pensions. With over 30 years in pensions, she is qualified as a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society, and is the current President of the Local Institute of the CII in Edinburgh, as well as a Governor of The Pensions Policy Institute.

Pensions Dashboards: Re-animating pensions for UK savers

Following years of debate, false starts and doomsayers, the legislation requiring pension arrangements to provide savers data via pensions dashboards, materialised in the Pension Schemes Act 2021. Pensions Dashboards will enable individuals to find and view their pension information online, securely and all in one place.

The mission is clear, but what does this mean in practice for Third-Party Administrators (TPAs) and in-house administered Schemes tackling this challenge?
