It’s a common misconception that shorting is the opposite of what one looks for on the long side; they’re quite different and successful shorting entails a unique process. Short selling works with Alger’s investment style because at Alger we pride ourselves on unbiased critical thinking and deep research.

Why Short Stocks?

In terms of Growth and Value, the biggest determinant between these styles is price-to-book value. We believe price-to-book value is no longer as relevant as it was decades ago. As the economy has evolved, companies are investing much more in intangible assets. At Alger, we employ a team of analysts to incorporate assets, like intangibles, that may not be included on financial statements, making what we believe are better investment decisions as a result.

Style Classification Is Failing Investors

Many smaller, nimble businesses are using internet-related technologies and other digital innovations to disrupt their respective industries and sometimes displace legacy companies. In this way leading smaller cap companies are widening their economic moats, which may make them potentially attractive investment opportunities.

At Alger, we pay close attention to innovation of all kinds. Megacap companies are not the only innovators worth watching. In many industries, smaller companies are innovation leaders, quicker to offer new products and services than industry giants. Two examples of this are human resources and financial operations and controls, key functions of any company.
