2D versus 3D: Benefits of Moving to 3D Cell Culture

Commercial process technologies for biologics manufacturing are facing multiple challenges because of ongoing market economic pressure, uncertainty in market growth and low productivity manufacturing technologies. To overcome these challenges in novel production processes, HYPER Technology is one of technological advantages available. The next generation High Yield PERformance (HYPER) technology lets you grow large quantities of adherent cells in a compact space. The cell production technology uses a unique ultra-thin gas-permeable film to eliminate the air gap within the vessel. This results in a substantial increase in cell growth surface area compared to traditional vessels of comparable cubic footprint.
Join us as we evaluate the available platforms for commercializing adherent cell culture-based products, we will discuss the science of HYPER Technology and how its enabling process intensification and scale up. Three-dimensional (3D) cultures such as spheroids and organoids are an important part of the research model market, helping to close the gap between cell cultures and animal models. Both organoids and spheroids have been used to create in vivo-like tissue models of cancer subtypes to study novel therapies and to make models for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine studies. But there are some key differences, with important implications for various applications. The right tool for a project is not always obvious. For spheroids and organoids, knowing where the cultures are similar and where they differ will help scientists select the best resource for their projects the first time around.
