  • Canary in a Coal Mine Jul 22 2021 5:00 pm UTC 45 mins
Dr. Georgianna Shea Chief Technologist, CCTI’s Transformative Cyber Innovation Lab Foundation for Defense of Democracies
Cyber defenders strive to make their organization a hard target for attackers by building strong perimeters and training fellow staff to counter the tactics attackers use. No amount of defense, however, can stop a determined, well-resourced adversary from finding a way in. Instead of exclusively focusing on the techniques that lead to compromising an account and the protections that will inevitably, eventually fail, network defenders can anticipate a breach and prepare for it by using detection capabilities that exploit the attacker’s goal of obtaining a valid account to maneuver. An effective defensive cyber operations team fuses the knowledge of the system under protection with a defensive strategy that anticipates an attacker breaching the system and using valid accounts to enable many of the techniques identified in the MITRE ATT&CK framework. In this environment, a little deception goes a long way.

  • Future-Proofing Data Centers: What Entails this New Era of Data Storage? Jul 21 2021 9:00 pm UTC 45 mins
Kristy Nelson, MBA/Paralegal E.G.S. Management Consult, Inc.
The evolution of data storage can be traced back to 1725 with the invention of punch-cards, leading to IBM’s floppy disk which was released in the 1970’s. This was soon replaced in the 1980’s from hard disk drives, upgraded to compact discs (CD’s); as we progressed with flash storage into the 20th century and beyond.
Data storage only got bigger and more complexed with the new emergence of technological offerings from vendors. The Data Storage sector was directly impacted by COVID-19 because of its greater economic reliance. There was positive affect from the pandemic that led to a new paradigm, from outlook to implementation. This new era of storage strategy will not only veer away from being immersed in technology but focus on the business needs to ensure its capacity for future scaling. Storage trends should assess new strategies to optimize performance while balancing costs and not hindering growth.
There are a variety of storage types but not all will continue to develop towards the new era. Organizations must also address their top IT concerns when transitioning to new technology storage. What are these concerns? Which data storage types can manage these concerns effectively?
This webinar will focus on the new era to discuss:
    1) What is the new era of data storage strategies?
    2) What storage types will continue to develop for consolidation and for best optimization?
    3) How to address cost control?
    4) What are the best Data Management practices going into this new era of data storage?

  • Exploring Stateful Microservices in the Cloud Native World Jun 24 2021 9:00 pm UTC 45 mins
Mary Grygleski, Senior Developer Advocate, IBM
How does one choose to architect a system that has a Microservice / REST API endpoints? There are many solutions out there. Some are better than others. Should state be held in a server side component, or externally? Generally we are told this is not a good practice for a Cloud Native system, when the 12-factor guidelines seem to be all about stateless containers, but is it? It’s unclear and this confusion may lead to poor technology stack choices that are impossible or extremely hard to change later on as your system evolves in terms of demand and performance.

While stateless systems are easier to work with, the reality is that we live in a stateful world, so we have to handle the state of data accordingly to ensure data integrity beyond securing it.

We will examine and demonstrate the fundamentals of a Cloud Native system with Stateful Microservices that’s built with Open Liberty in Kubernetes:
