Managing an Efficient Virtual Data Centre Environment

Manage webcast
Gregor Petri, Lean IT & Cloud Computing Advisor, CA Technologies
Many hypes in IT are just the same old idea, tried again, but with better technology and under a new name. The Data Center is dead, long live the Virtual Data Center? The danger of this is that we treat the Virtual Data center just like a new type of infrastructure and simply rehost our existing applications from physical to virtual machines (P2V), just as we rehosted them from Mainframes to Mini’s in the days of downsizing. But if we only rehost we will miss out big time on the potential benefits of virtualization: which are not just cost and energy reductions, but also business and IT agility, management efficiency, market responsiveness and service improvements. Not to mention that – again just with downsizing (the rumors of the mainframes death were highly exaggerated) - we now see virtualization efforts stall at around the 30% mark.

Hear how a virtualization maturity based approach can help overcome these hurdles and allow you to reap the true benefits.

  • Data Preparation For Fast Insights Right From the Start Oct 7 2015 7:00 pm UTC 60 mins
Dr. Kirk Borne, Principal Data Scientist, Strategic Innovation Group, Booz Allen Hamilton
Data preparation is occasionally referred to as data plumbing, suggesting that it is dirty grunge work that is an unglamorous necessity. We will see how this point of view misses entirely the discovery potential, value, and “thrill of the chase” that data preparation can offer. Data prep includes the all important first step in any analytics project: “Know Thy Data” (which is one of the fundamental principles of data science). We discuss data profiling, data transformations and normalization, feature selection and engineering, and more data prep approaches that empower you to begin learning from your data right out of the “starting gate” on your analytics project. Learning from Data (i.e., data science) doesn’t begin after data prep, but right from the start.

  • The Complicated World of Cloud Value: Which Cloud is the Right One? Aug 18 2015 5:00 pm UTC 45 mins
Dr. Owen Rogers 451 Research Snr Analyst, Digital Economics & Brian Kelley, CloudGenera CEO
To examine the real-world cost of cloud over time, 451 Research’s Cloud Price Index has been tracking the price of cloud since 2014. Like a consumer price index, our CPI is made up of a basket of goods, but in our case, it is a specification of the services required to operate a typical Web server application. The index shows a complicated and ever changing market where value, performance and even just price are difficult to measure. Being aware of the differences between options is the first step to gaining best value, using tools to compare them can ensure ongoing suitability.

  • Does Your Organisation Really Know it's True or Total IT Cost? Aug 12 2015 9:00 am UTC 75 mins
Jerry Wertelecky, CPA, Fellow HKloD & Managing Director
IT spend has become one of the largest budget line items in companies today. IT organizations worldwide spent over $4 trillion dollars in 2013 alone. Despite the growth in IT spend, many IT organizations do not have the capability to clearly and easily articulate where that spend is going, how it correlates to the services they are delivering or what value the business is realizing from the services.

In order to stay competitive, businesses are seeking ways to optimize and align future IT investment decisions with the strategic direction of the company. By making all of the costs of running IT transparent, IT can change the way business units consume IT resources, drive down total enterprise IT costs and focus on IT spending that delivers real business value.

Join Jerry Wertelecky as he discusses:

    • Facilitate collaboration between IT and Finance to increase visibility into the costs, utilization and operations of all IT Services

    • Leverage a deep understanding of what drives IT costs and performance to improve scenario planning capabilities and make better IT decisions

    • Provide IT cost and consumption data to business owners in the form of a “Bill of IT” to more effectively communicate the value of IT to the business.
