On the Creation of a Micro Grid to Enable Smart Grid

The talk will present a fundamentally new approach that creates a generalized convergence of communications with information technology to result in the UCLA WINSmartGridTM (Wireless Internet Smart Grid http://winmec.ucla.edu/smartgrid). The technological approach, WINSmartGridTM, presents a converged approach for real-time monitoring within residential, commercial or industrial sectors. Its architecture supports multiple wireless protocols and works with various sensors such as temperature, humidity, shock, motion, etc., to monitor necessary versus unnecessary consumption. Its embedded capability controls appliances wirelessly and/or controls reverse-fills electrical power from electric vehicles. Its architecture enables renewable energy sources such as solar PVC with stand-alone batteries or aggregate EVs to be integrated within a micro-grid in a campus setting such as UCLA. A micro-grid campus demonstration is being developed within UCLA’s school of engineering as part of the Smart Grid Energy Research Center (http://smartgrid.ucla.edu) or SMERC. UCLA is a participant in DOE’s Smart Grid ARRA funding and is working on developing within SMERC and with its collaborators, the underlying foundational technologies that would go into solving problems such as Automated Demand Response, EV Integration (G2V and V2G), Cyber-security, renewable integration architecture, and, integration of community storage within a Microgrid. These demonstrations will be held within UCLA and their scalability will be studied. The talk will discuss the research and technological developments in these ongoing demonstration activities.
