Focus on Impact: Investing in Solutions to Address Society’s Biggest Challenges

Creating Positive Futures: Episode 1

Impact investing focuses on addressing the world’s most pressing problems while delivering financial returns, seeking societal advancement to bring prosperity for all. Investments in healthcare are focusing on advancements in life sciences and telemedicine, whereas net-zero climate solutions are helping investors re-think renewable energy. Impact also include social investments to promote inclusion, quality work and education across the globe. The metrics of impact success are currently being formalised across industries and regions, often referencing the SDG framework. Their application is wide, from listed equities to green bonds. In the evolving world of impact investing, a question persists: which areas should impact investing be targeting? What are the best opportunities to make a positive societal difference and earn an financial return?

In this series, M&G reviews the current and predicted future state of impact investing and identifies areas where investors can have the most impact across the globe. Initial discussions explore how investors can combat the climate emergency, and the methods used to measure impact. Later in the series, we will focus on how investors can deliver positive social impact, a guide on avoiding greenwashing, and what impact investing looks like outside Europe.

  • Measuring Your Impact: Evidencing Your Investment Outcomes Recorded: Apr 13 2021 36 mins
David Halfacre, Partnerships Director, M&G | Ben Constable-Maxwell. Head of Sustainable and Impact Investing, M&G
Many of M&G's focus points have been taken from the UNs SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). The UN outlined 17 key goals, including fighting poverty, zero hunger, gender equality, and climate action. Taking these goals, M&G has defined their own social responsibility and defined measurable goals and impact investments.

Measuring the success of these efforts is vital for transparency and visibility. When it comes to investing in efforts combating the climate emergency, investments can show CO2 emissions saving in tonnes. Further, annual impact reports demonstrate the net positive impact of each investment.

To make sure that investments are authentic and true to the fight against social and environmental issues, having numerical measurements of impact is key, even when impact feels abstract.

In this session, we will discuss:

    - Best practices of impact investing
    - Investment regulations, and why these are important
    - Additionality and measurability
  • Breakfast Club: M&G Global Dividend Fund Update Recorded: Apr 8 2021 27 mins
    Kotaro Miyata, Investment Specialist
The M&G Global Dividend Fund has benefited from its diversified ‘buckets’ approach in an environment where the combination of rising bond yields and cyclicals rallying has provided a headwind for many dividend strategies. Kot will highlight the pivotal role played by the cyclical ‘assets’ bucket in the value rotation, as well as discussing the influence of ESG in the decision making process and the dividend outlook for the portfolio.

Please note, the value of the fund's assets will go down as well as up. This will cause the value of your investment to fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you originally invested.

  • The Race to Net Zero: Climate Solutions for the Future Recorded: Mar 16 2021 27 mins
David Halfacre, Partnerships Director, M&G | Rachel Roddy, Investment Specialist, M&G | Randeep Somel, Fund Manager, M&G
In 2020 the macro picture for climate change shifted. Biden re-joining the Paris agreement, and China signing up to carbon neutrality by 2060, framed 2020 as the year of huge change for climate solutions. In China, more vigorous green policies could see them reaching their peak carbon emissions by 2030, and reaching total carbon neutrality by 2060. The rate of change in the last 12 months in the climate change space is emblematic of the change being made operationally in the investment industry. In March 2020, M&G made two new commitments to the acceleration of efforts combating climate change. Firstly, to reach a net zero carbon emissions on the total book of assets under management by the year 2050. Secondly, M&G is committed to reducing operational carbon emissions to net zero by the year 2030.

Some of the ways that investment companies can improve their dedication to the resolution of the climate emergency include engaging with company management and allocating capital towards lower emissions sectors. M&G has taken this approach, as well as encouraging climate-related disclosures, higher engagement with investee companies, and improving organisational research and analysis capabilities in order to gather more comprehensive data on investment exposure. In this session we will be looking at the other ways investment companies like M&G are tackling the climate emergency.

So, how can you take actionable measures in the corporate world to combat climate change, what will be the biggest challenges along the way, and how can you overcome these hurdles?

In this session, we will discuss:

    - The bigger picture in the climate change space, what is happening globally, and where more work still needs to be done
    - The race to net zero, and macro tailwinds
    - The circular economy
    - Green technology
    - The business opportunities when it comes to climate change, and the kinds of investment opportunities that have arisen as a result of the climate emergency

  • M&G Talks: Enhancing prospective returns in a low return environment Recorded: Jul 16 2020 42 mins
    Steven Andrew
Despite being in the midst of one of the most challenging economic periods in history we have actually witnessed three exceptional decades for the traditional long-only 60/40 balanced fund.

Equities and bonds have enjoyed stunning bull markets and, over the last 25 years, have provided negative correlation during equity bear markets. The result has been a staggering return for this type of ‘naïve’ strategy: Looking ahead, however, the journey looks a lot tougher and we are looking at the lowest prospective yield on a 60/40 equity/bond portfolio that we have seen in the past 40 years.

That is a sobering thought for future returns and is an environment which will require investors to expect more dynamic and tactical investing in order to be able to deliver returns.

We invite you on 16 July at 10:00 BST to a conversation with Jonathan Willcocks and Steven Andrew as they discuss their outlook for Multi Asset Investing in this challenging environment.

Please note, the value of the fund's assets will go down as well as up. This will cause the value of your investment to fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you originally invested.
