After a painful period of aggressive rate rises, US inflation is headed back towards the US Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Significant cuts in interest rates should follow in late 2023 & 2024. There’s been much less progress  in the UK but that is about to change. But recession risks remain on both sides of the Atlantic. Our Chief Economist, Steven Bell discuss this and the outlook for financial markets.

2022 was a difficult year in the industry – bonds didn’t diversify stocks and many multi-asset funds didn’t diversify one another. If one lesson was learnt off the back of this, it was that name diversification does not equal fundamental diversification. 

In this 30-minute presentation, Orbis highlights the importance of true fundamental diversification against the backdrop of the value versus growth cycle, the importance of rebalancing, and how a well-diversified, regularly rebalanced portfolio can improve outcomes in the decumulation phase.

By the end of the session, you will be able to:

2.       Distinguish between name diversification and true fundamental diversification
3.       Articulate the benefits of blending funds with different styles, including in decumulation

Balancing the Blend

Why has the performance of the UK market lagged that of many other countries despite its recovery since October 2022? Julian Cane, manager of CT UK Capital & Income Investment Trust, will look at some possible explanations. Although there are reasons to be cautious of the UK economy, it’s also notable that the Bank of England has just made a substantial upgrade to its economic forecasts. While a higher rate of inflation is recognised as a drag on investors’ real returns, the potential of growth from equities can be seen as a cure. The trust isn’t managed with a particular macro view of the economy, but on a bottom-up basis, with a focus on individual stock selection. Julian will cover positioning in the current climate and the main drivers of performance.
