Getting published in a high-impact journal: Tips from a senior journal editor

Presented by

Dr. Caven Mcloughlin

About this talk

It is never easy to get a foothold onto the academic ladder. And, maintaining that foothold requires one to have articles accepted by strong journals. Some researchers seem forever to stumble and miss seeing the obvious. Professor Mcloughlin will share his experiences by pointing to some all-too-frequently encountered barriers to publishing success. From his perspective as a long-time journal editor, he will share ‘insider-knowledge’ about the most common mistakes made when submitting manuscripts. Errors can doom the prospects of a submission before it even gets sent out for full review. Sadly, slipups are equally a feature of veterans’ submissions as well as those new to publishing. The webinar will draw attention to elements entirely different from those presumed by most authors to be important for generating a journal acceptance. Authors tend to focus on detail and ‘telling the story’ of their investigation. Editors focus on sharing big-ideas; on context, format & structure; on consistency with their journal’s mission; and with compliance to publishing conventions. Displayed in this webinar are the features sought by editors and by reviewers. It can be frustrating for editors and reviewers to receive submissions that have a kernel of clear value but with the value obscured by gaffes ~ simply because the author fails to perceive their work as an editor will see it. Editors are less likely to gamble on an author who displays naivety and unsophistication in communicating their research. Gaining an editor’s confidence by delivering what is expected helps buttress the presumption that as an author you are competent and credible as a researcher. The basic message? Align your submission fully consistent with editorial-team’s expectations. Note that the webinar will be in English
