Ensuring high quality standards in consumer goods is a continually evolving topic, which includes guaranteeing not only low levels of microbial contaminants, but also absence of potentially pathogenic microbes. One problematic group, known as the Burkholderia cepacia complex, consists of a group of closely related species known to challenge preservative systems and contaminate consumer goods. While traditional detection methods may take upwards of 6 days to determine presence of Burkholderia cepacia, newer rapid detection methods can shorten the time to result dramatically. Further, advances in microbial identification methods continue to aid in the characterization of recovered microbes so that the source of microbial contamination can be found and mitigated.
