Just like many libraries around the world, University of Johannesburg library struggled with providing their patrons with remote access to their subscribed resources throughout the prevailing months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This is until they decided to move to federated access by implementing OpenAthens to improve patrons’ access experience.

Join us on July 13, 2021 as Janina Van der Westhuizen, Head of Technical Services and her colleagues at University of Johannesburg share their patron access change management best practices and what the results have been so far. The session will be moderated by Kelechi Okere, Global Director, Seamless Access at Elsevier and we will also be joined by James Edwards, International Sales Manager at OpenAthens.

Best practice for access to library e-resources during the pandemic and beyond

Research assessment should not be centered solely on bibliometrics such as publication and citation metrics but should encompass other measures that address the broad range of assessment-related questions. These cover research inputs, outputs and outcomes, such as funding, collaboration, usage, commercialization and the adoption of innovation. As more diverse data sources and metrics are used, a richer and more informative picture of research emerges.

The International Center for the Study of Research (ICSR) was established by Elsevier in 2019 with a mission to further the study of research and thus to contribute to the evidence base supporting the practice of research strategy, evaluation and policy. In 2020, ICSR and Elsevier signed the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and endorsed the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics, two internationally-recognized statements of best practice in responsible research assessment.

In this Library Connect webinar, Christopher Belter will discuss what responsible research assessment might look like in practice for a large biomedical funding agency. ICSR staff members Andrew Plume and Holly Falk-Krzesinski will then discuss the recommendations of both DORA and the Leiden Manifesto and their implications for Elsevier as well as for librarians and their users.

A small team at CCT College Dublin was given a very big goal. A new IR and faculty profiling tool from Digital Commons was provided to enable strategic developments pertaining to institutional scholarly activity. In the span of little more than a year – and in the midst of COVID - Team CCT  has made quick strides in using their IR to underpin and showcase teaching and learning activities, student achievement, quality and enhancement projects, research activity (including student research), and sectoral engagement. Although in the relatively early stages of development, the IR is now successfully embedded across many institutional activities with further plans in the pipeline which will be explored in this webinar.
